Ryan Gosling to Star in New Daniels Film

UPDATE 4/2: Ah, what could’ve been. Ryan Gosling has dropped out of starring in the new movie from the Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, IndieWire has learned.

Per Deadline, which initially reported the news, the film qualified for a California tax credit and is shooting in Los Angeles, but it needs to shoot this summer and was unable to move off its target date, which didn’t align with Gosling’s schedule as he wraps the “Star Wars” movie “Starfighter.”

No new casting has yet been reported, so stay tuned.

Original Story: Here’s a pairing that makes so much sense. Ryan Gosling, hot off one of the biggest openings of his career in “Project Hail Mary,” is trading in working with directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller to team with another famous directing duo: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a.k.a. Daniels, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

We still don’t have a title or a plot synopsis for what is the next movie from the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” filmmakers, but we do know that production is expected to begin in Los Angeles this summer, and that the movie will open in theaters on November 19, 2027.

The Daniels are also working with Universal Pictures this time around after winning Best Picture, so expect whatever their new film is to give them an even bigger sandbox to play around in. Now they have one of today’s bigger movie stars to anchor it — and he just proved that he can open an original, feel-good, fantastical epic to four-quadrant appeal.

Gosling seems like a strong fit given his knack for blending self-deprecating and sometimes oddball humor with some serious dramatic chops. The Daniels won Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis Oscars for their work in “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” so perhaps some more awards buzz could be in Gosling’s future.

The untitled film is produced by Kwan, Scheinert, and Jonathan Wang through their Playgrounds overall deal with Universal. Playgrounds’ Kwan and Wang recently produced “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist,” which Universal’s own Focus Features is releasing tomorrow, March 27.

Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the studio.

Gosling up next is starring in Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter.” He is represented by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Daniels are represented by Mosaic and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.

Deadline first reported the news.
