We’ll have more foreign updates for you tomorrow.

FRIDAY UPDATE: No mushrooms needed to enlarge these plumbers, but for the most part, they’re staying at the same girth from when they pounced around the world three years ago.

Essentially, the global running box office of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has as much rocket fuel as 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, and that’s a good thing. Current total since Wednesday around the world is $122.1M for the Illumination/Nintendo/Universal title, which is 1.1% ahead of the reported global haul of Super Mario Bros at the same point in time (that counted $120.7M from its Wednesday and Thursday). International alone for the first two days of the sequel is $63M, on par with the first movie. Thursday overseas at 78 markets was $27.9M; Super Mario Bros reported $27.6M. As we told you earlier this morning, domestic stands at $59.1M.

In terms of movement on Thursday, Mexico added $5.7M, taking the pic’s south-of-the-border cume to $12.5M. The sequel at No. 1 is owning 85% share of the total box office. The pic is booked at 4,900 screens this weekend.

UK & Ireland grossed $3M on Thursday in the No. 1 spot, repping a 50% share of the day’s B.O. for a $7.3M two-day total.

Germany added $2.8M on Thursday in first place, reaching a $6.6M cume — already the biggest opening week of the year at the country’s B.O.

Spain grossed $2.3M on Thursday, for a $5.4M cume to date as the No.1 title with 57% market share.

Central America with $1.5M repped the second-biggest Thursday gross ever in the market, behind Avengers: Endgame and outgrossing Super Mario Bros‘ opening Thursday by 4%. Running two-day total is $2.3M, and the sequel is conquering with a 94% market share.

Italy added $1.2M on Thursday, hitting a $2.7M running cume as the No. 1 title with a great 64% market share.

In early China numbers for the sequel’s first day, it’s the top pic in the market with an estimated $1.58M ahead of Project Hail Mary ($1M).

THURSDAY UPDATE: There’s a universal language being spoken this week, and that’s Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie which is posted a full-day Wednesday global figure of $68.4M, $33.9M of that from 78 markets.

That’s a bigger result worldwide than the first Super Mario Bros Movie which posted a first day (reported, not adjusted for inflation) of $66.4M ($34.7M offshore).

Several records were broken. Ala the U.S. and Canada, Mario’s legacy as a console game translates at the box office, hence robust tickets sales for most of Europe, and Latin America.

No surprise, Mexico with $6.7M scored the biggest Universal opening ever there and the second biggest animated opening ever. The first day beat Super Mario Bros‘ $5.9M, that pic finaling at a reported $85.3M, the second biggest territory for the movie after the $101M+ racked up in Japan (which was the biggest haul for any Uni movie in the country).

UK & Ireland posted $4.3M, which is the second highest single-day preview figure for an animated film in the history of box office on the isle.

Germany’s $3.8M reps the biggest animated opening of all-time and Universal’s biggest opening of all-time. The first movie posted a $2.8M first day.

Spain‘s $3M was the second highest opening day for an animated title of all-time, as well as the 3rd biggest opening day of all-time behind Twilight and Inside Out 2. It was also an improvement upon the 2023’s $2.2M Wednesday there.

France‘s $2.9M is the second biggest Illumination opening of all-time (and the biggest outside of holidays).

Central America‘s $1.8M scored the second biggest opening day of all-time in the market, only behind Avengers: Endgame. Super Mario Bros did a reported $1.3M there.

Austria‘s $700K repped the biggest Universal opening day of all-time in the market and the biggest Animation opening day of all-time.

Other opening day grosses included Italy ($1.5M), Colombia ($1.1M) and Australia ($0.7M).

Remember, China is getting a 3-day weekend opening versus a 5-day on the first 2023 movie. Also, Japan, Korea, Israel and Poland are opening down the road.
